Markham Canada Day 2019: Complete List Of Activities

Canadians from all different backgrounds come together on July 1st to celebrate the birth of their home country. So, when it comes time to take pride in Canada as a progressive, tolerant, diverse country, there’s plenty to do in Markham! Whether you’re coming into the area for a holiday or are a resident looking to celebrate without venturing into downtown Toronto, here’s just a sampling of things you can do in Markham for Canada Day 2019.

TD Taste Of Asia 2019

If there’s one thing all Canadians love, it’s good food. And it doesn’t matter where it comes from, as long as it tastes great! Because Markham is such a stronghold for East, South, and Southeast Asian communities, you can celebrate Canada Day early by visiting the TD Taste of Asia 2019!

This early event leading up to Canada Day runs from June 28th to 30th. Take in Asian cuisine in a street-food-style venue as booths line Kennedy Road and Steeles Ave East. The event has been running in the area since 2003 and has grown from just a collection of food stalls to a way for families to participate in events and see performances from other cultures.

Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, and many other ethnic foods and cultures are available to sample from. At this event in Markham for Canada Day 2019, different Asian backgrounds show off the rich diversity of food that has become part of Canada’s cultural mosaic. Make sure to come on an empty stomach to make the most of the experience.

Unionville Performance

For people who want a little music to go with their patriotism, Canada Day in Unionville is one option. It begins on July 1st between 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. at the Unionville Millennium Bandstand. The Kindred Spirits Orchestra (KSO) will begin a free performance for anyone who comes down. The KSO has been performing in Markham and throughout the Greater Toronto Area since 2009 and has received accolades and acclaim for their music.

You can enjoy the music outdoors and experience a unique Canada Day evening until it gets dark. Then, it’s time for the fireworks; take in the sounds and the lights as the celebration really gets underway.

Canada Day Cruise

Some people love cars, and if you love the country too, then there’s no better way to celebrate both than with a Canada Day Cruise! Taking place from 3:30 to 9:00 p.m., this automotive event is run by the Thornhill Cruisers Car Club, an organization dedicated to a love of classic cars and getting a chance to see them, talk about them, and even get some help in restoring them.

Because the club meets on Mondays, this coincides perfectly with Canada Day this year. So, if you’d like to take in some beautiful, classic cars that you’d rarely find on the road, come down to 2900 Major Mackenzie Drive and see for yourself.

Citizenship Swearing In

Canada’s diversity continues to grow every year with more people from around the world coming to the Great White North in hopes of making a better life for themselves. What’s more inspiring than showing your support for a new batch of Canadians officially becoming citizens?

Markham’s immigrant community celebrates Canada Day with an annual Citizenship Event. This activity is more for early risers, as it begins at 8:30 a.m., but for people who want to welcome new Canadians into the fold, just come down to the Markham Civic Centre.

Canada Day

Finally, Canada Day 2019 in Markham has the official celebrations that you’d expect anywhere in the country or province. That means that residents don’t have to make the pilgrimage to downtown if they don’t feel like it.

The events run all day but are concentrated in Milne Dam Conservation Park, so either drive down or plan for some public transportation as shuttles buses and other alternatives will be on hand. There will be something for everyone, especially the children, with many events and performances, interactive installations, music, and, of course, shopping and food.

If you plan to stay all day in Markham for Canada Day 2019, the highlight is the fireworks display in the evening. So, make sure that you plan accordingly because when you come down, there’s going to be plenty to keep you busy in what some call Canada’s most diverse city.
